Amateur League

Amateur League
Man is not merely a rational or creative being, but also a playing being, and perhaps it is play itself, first and foremost, that is originally expressed in human nature. Culture is born from play, and play is one of the purest and most primal manifestations of human freedom. For this reason, the massification, institutionalisation, and commercialisation of play do not necessarily bring it closer to its true essence. Often, they even distance it from its original archetype, in which play exists purely for its own sake.
The Armenian amateur football league is a living embodiment of that idea. Here, play has been stripped of almost all its material incentives. There are no large contracts, no media attention, no fame. There are just people who gather for the sake of football, often in uncomfortable conditions. That choice alone speaks volumes: when profit and career prospects disappear, only the true essence of play remains.
The people pictured in these photographs are not playing to achieve something else, they are playing simply to play. In their actions lies what could be called, in the spirit of Dutch philosopher-historian Huizinga’s own definition, an autotelic activity, one that carries its purpose within itself.
Love for play never demands perfection. It is simply the persistence to return: to step onto the field one more time, to chase after the ball, even while knowing the outcome holds no promise of glory. It is precisely in play's myth-free repetition that freedom is born, and this documentary photo essay bears witness to that.
